KIND network update
Week beginning Mon 2nd December 2024
Dear colleagues,
Welcome to our regular KIND network update. We’ve got a few R-themed events coming up this week, including our regular monthly R beginners club session. Hope to see you there if you’re curious about R, a new R starter, or trying to build your R skills.

Wins of The Week
In the spirit of #IAmRemarkable, we do a weekly wins of the week thread to celebrate the professional (and personal) achievements of the community. A random selection from last week:
- Felt like I was plodding along this week, but looking back I’ve managed to get a couple of large pieces of work completed and am organised for next week so a success!
- Been asked to go along to a group run by a colleague, to support some work they’re doing and bring a different viewpoint. Chuffed at being asked and that my opinion is valued in a non-threatening but supportive way
- I won an americano tournament in paddle 🎊
- Finally managed to complete and submit the practical component of my GA coursework assignment.

Events
- 3-4pm, Mon 2nd December 2024. All welcome at the Community Meetup - our regular Monday get-together/webinar/tech demo. Full details and joining links via the community meetup channel. The theme this week is using SQL in R. We’ll be looking at some beginner-friendly ways of starting to use SQL databases as a tool for managing data in R.
- NES’s Knowledge Services team are re-running their excellent and highly-regarded series of short events about research and publication next week. Full details and registration links
- Our monthly R beginner’s club is running Thursday 14th November 3-4pm. A group session for R beginners to review their code, get unstuck, and pick up some tips and tricks. More experienced R programmers are absolutely welcome too, but this session is focused on those new to (or returning to) R code. All welcome, especially if you’re brand new to R or are coming from our R from Scratch course.
Book of the week
Mervyn King. 2016. The End of Alchemy: Money, Banking and the Future of the Global Economy.
ISBN 978-1408706114, Worldcat.
Colin Smith, an information analyst at NHS GGC writes to recommend this book: ‘A very interesting book from 2016. Not medical but given we’ve another potential round of ’austerity’ on the way, still relevant as to how we run the economy and fund the NHS and public services.’.
