Week beginning Mon 10th February 2025

Dear colleagues,

Welcome to the regular KIND network update. We have lots of regular training sessions coming up over the next week. You can also get a longer-term overview of what’s on offer from our training mini-site, which has a schedule, supporting materials, and useful resources for our sessions.

We’re a couple of weeks away from piloting a new, intermediate-level, Power BI course. More details on that below.

Hope to see you at something soon

Brendan

New intermediate-level Power BI course

This is a practical course aimed at people with some prior Power BI experience who are looking to develop and consolidate their skills. It’ll use Power BI Desktop, and will run as five sessions along the following lines (click the session titles to book):

  • session 1: a simple build-a-dashboard session as a warmup, reminder about core Power BI techniques, and sharing some suggestions for good workflow practices
  • session 2: DAX language foundations, including FILTER and CALCULATE
  • session 3: core PowerQuery functions to manage sources, join data sets, pivot, and tidy values
  • session 4: PowerQuery M language foundations, including a basic overview of syntax, a core function toolkit, advanced mode, and reproducibility
  • session 5: a second, more ambitious, build-a-dashboard session to put all that PowerQuery and DAX knowledge into practice

The pilot sessions will run 10-12 on Wednesday mornings from Feb 12th. All those with suitable prior Power BI experience are very welcome. Once we’ve had the benefit of feedback on the pilot, you can expect to see a more polished version of this training running regularly on the network.

I’d be especially interested in feedback about that overall plan at this stage. Please get in touch with me if you’d be interested in shaping that training.

Wins of The Week

In the spirit of #IAmRemarkable, we do a weekly wins of the week thread to celebrate the professional (and personal) achievements of the community:

  • Owned up to knowing (and then promptly forgetting) about a problem which caused significant delays to my team’s work. Felt bad that it happened, but glad I was honest and admitted my mistake. Have jotted down some reflections to hopefully prevent it from happening again!
  • Brought a surveillance system used by our team into the tidyverse and built an automated weekly report in Rmarkdown :)
  • I gave a presentation at a national meeting with about 30 minutes preparation, and it went really well.
  • I have managed to juggle a busy work schedule, social life, family time, caring responsibilities and made it to Friday with a smile on my face

Well done all, and looking forward to hearing your wins of the week in future.
